Spotlight on: Malaria

Malaria is a serious infection spread by the bite of an infected mosquito – it only takes one bite!

It is most commonly found in tropical regions such as:

  • Africa and Asia

  • Central and South America

  • Dominican Republic and Haiti

  • Middle East

  • Pacific Islands

Malaria is on the rise. The World Health Organisation reports that in 2022, global malaria cases were estimated at 249 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 16 million compared to 2019[1].

To keep yourself safe whilst overseas, our travel health nurse specialists recommend following the ABCD code for travellers.

A – Awareness: Before you travel, consider the risks in your destination and what action you need to take to keep safe.

B – Bite prevention: Take steps to reduce the chance of being bitten. Consider using a repellent and sleeping under a mosquito net.

C – Chemoprophylaxis: Appropriate antimalarial medication may be taken to reduce the risk of you contracting malaria should you be bitten. Our travel specialist will be happy to discuss your needs.

D – Diagnosis: If you experience malaria symptoms including fever, shivering and vomiting, you should seek medical advice.

If you are travelling to an area where malaria is a risk, it is important to seek the right advice before you go.

Our travel health nurse specialists can provide tailored advice on your chosen destination and talk you through steps to keep yourself safe depending on your trip itinerary.
